Naomi Adams, 32, studied on Kensington and Chelsea College’s summer school Health and Social Care course before progressing on to Level 2 Health and Social Care at the College. Her ambition is to become a nurse and she is being supported throughout her studies by the College’s Study Support Service as Naomi is profoundly Deaf and partially sighted.
My first language is British Sign Language so I am supported by BSL / English interpreters. The interpreters work with the teaching staff to ensure the materials I receive are large enough for me to see properly. I feel emotional just talking about the support I have received at Kensington and Chelsea College. “The interpreters have been absolutely fantastic, not just in terms of interpreting but also with encouragement and helping build my confidence after not being in education for so long. Without this support I would not have been able to access the course, so it has quite literally meant everything to me.
It definitely has to be my confidence… Before I started the course I was just interested in a career in the care sector, but now I am determined to get there. Through the course I was made aware of what’s involved in working in this kind of environment and the things you need to consider when doing so. “I have gained academic knowledge and developed the personal skills needed to work in this environment. I think my biggest achievement so far has to be receiving an overall distinction for my summer course. I’m still struggling to believe I did that!
