This one year (34 weeks) level 1 course takes place at our Kensington Centre on Wednesday and Thursday. You will consider topics such as how we protect children, play, development and health and safety.
There is no work placement at level 1 although volunteering is always encouraged

You need an interest in working with children.
What does the course lead to?
The course gives you a level 1 qualification which enables you to apply for the level 2 course

What are the facilities and equipment like?
The course is run in a dedicated classroom. It has computers for all students to use. You can also bring in your laptop. The college has a library/study centre where you can work in silence or small groups. You also have access to its books and ebooks.
How much should I study outside class?
You should be studying around 5 hours outside class contact time. Certain times of the year may mean you have to study for longer hours. Students who do best work many hours on assignments outside the classroom.
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed throughout the year by short, interesting assignments and projects
Are course materials available online?
Lecturers make full use of moodle where you can assess materials to support you on the course. This is available both inside and outside college.
What books and equipment do I need?
You will need to buy two lever arch folders, plastic wallets, paper and general stationery.
What do I need to bring to the assessment/interview?
The initial assessment will take around 2 hours. You will have to bring proof of your GCSE grades to the assessment. After this you will be interviewed to check your commitment to long term study.
