This course provides an exciting introduction to fashion and textiles techniques.

You will build core skills and learn how to develop ideas to create fashion and textile work as you are guided through a range of interesting and challenging projects.

Entry Requirements

Candidates will be required to demonstrate their suitability for the course through interview with a selection of work or, should this not be available, an interview project.

What will I learn?

You will develop and test your creativity within a structure that will provide a sound base of skills and knowledge, while enhancing self-confidence and revealing the potential career demands and opportunities within the sector.  You will develop a broad base of skills including; drawing, mark making, photography and styling, research, textiles techniques, introductory sewing and fashion techniques, fashion illustration, 3D and sketchbook presentation .

Functional Skills in English and Maths or GCSE retakes for students with Grade D.

The course will provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to progress to the next level of education and training.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught through a range of classroom based activities and workshops, complimented with a range of external trips and visits.  You will apply your knowledge and develop skills through a series of projects covering a range of fashion disciplines. This will lead to the creation of a portfolio, garment pieces, and a final exhibition. 

How will I be assessed?

Continual assessment is by coursework and is internally assessed and verified. This assessment is aimed at supporting your development through constructive feedback. 

The final project unit allows you to demonstrate all the learning that has taken place so far and is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.  This unit determines the overall qualification grade and is externally moderated by the awarding body UAL.

What can I do next?

– Further study: The level 1 course will help you to develop a portfolio of work to support progression into a range of Art and Design qualifications, usually at Level 2.

– Apprenticeship: you could apply for level 2 apprenticeships with employers in the local area subject to availability.

– Employment: The creative thinking skills and practical art skills you gain could help you to progress into the world of employment or to start your own business.
