Introduction to Printmaking

Key Course Information

This short course in printmaking is a practical studio based programme and combines structured teaching and informal workshop time.

You will learn to work in the light and the well-equipped print studio with specialist facilities and develop your ideas and imagery while gaining a good overview of Drypoint and Monoprinting techniques.

These classes are aimed at beginners, those who wish to re-fresh their printmaking skills and those who have a basic arts experience in any other visual arts discipline.

What does the course lead to?

This is a short introductory course to assist progression to our longer beginners or intermediate courses.

Where will I study?

The printmaking studio is at the Chelsea Centre, Hortensia Road, just off the Kings Road, in the Carlyle building on the ground floor, room CG05.

How much should I study outside class?

It is recommended that you prepare imagery and materials outside the class, so you can use the time in the studio more fully for printing and technical processing which cannot be done at home. A sketchbook documenting your ideas development, technical notes and research is also recommended.

Are any course materials online?

Once you are enrolled on the course you will be introduced to the college’s virtual learning environment. Here you will find materials and information in support of your studies.

What books and equipment do I need?

You need to bring: a sketchbook and some art equipment such as pencils, eraser, a range of brushes, Stanley knife, scissors and apron.

What else do I need to buy? What extra costs are there?

There is a studio fee of £4.95 payable to the tutor which covers basic materials, except paper and plates which you pay extra for as you use them. All materials are available to buy in the studio.
