Certificate in Teaching English to Adults CELTA (Level 5)

Key Course Information

On the course you will receive instruction on methods of teaching language and the analysis of the English language for teaching purposes. Teaching practice is an integral part of the course and you will teach 6 hours at two different levels. Your teaching will be observed by your tutor and fellow trainees. After teaching you will be given verbal and written feedback and your tutor will support you in planning your next lesson. Assessment on the course is based on your teaching practice and 4 CELTA written assignments. These assignments will be on the practical aspects of teaching and altogether require no more than 4,000 words. In order to be successful on the course you must complete all the assignments and reach the required standard in your teaching practice.

Entry Requirements

You need to be at a level that will allow you to enter Higher Education or University as well as being able to speak English at a high enough level (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English grade A or Cambridge Proficiency). You also need to be able to communicate clearly with people as well as show an awareness of language.

What will I learn? .

Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context

  • Understanding the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of learners, and how this might affect their learning of English
  • Understanding different learning styles and preferences.

Language analysis and awareness

  • Understanding key terminology used in English language teaching, applying this terminology in planning and teaching
  • Demonstrating a working knowledge of English grammar, lexis and phonology.

Language skills: reading,
listening, speaking and writing

  • Understanding basic concepts and terminology used for describing reading, listening, speaking and writing skills, applying this to teaching
  • Understanding how approaches to texts may vary depending on the purpose, making practical use of this in teaching.

Planning and resources
for different teaching contexts

  • Understanding the purpose and principles of planning for effective teaching
  • Selecting and planning the kinds of lessons that are most appropriate for particular learners
  • Evaluating lesson preparation and reflecting on this for planning future lessons.

Developing teaching skills
and professionalism

  • Effectively organising the classroom, both in terms of layout and pair/group activities
  • Making appropriate use of a range of materials and resources
  • Involving learners of different ability levels, enabling them to feel a sense of progress.


How will I be taught?

20  full day sessions one day per week (09:30 – 16:30). Applicants are requested to allow an additional 6 hours per week to complete homework & assessment tasks.

How will I be assessed?

You will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with adult classes at a minimum of two levels of ability. Continuous assessment is based on your overall performance.

You will complete four written assignments (each 750–1,000 words). These focus on:

  • analysing and responding to adult learner needs
  • analysing language for teaching purposes
  • teaching language skills
  • reflecting on classroom teaching.

What can I do next?

Find teaching work in the private or state sector in UK and abroad as it is a widely recognised and respected qualification. For the State sector – namely ‘Further Education’ -you need to be ready to undertake further state-sector oriented teaching qualifications as well i.e. AET and the DET (Award and Diploma in Education and Training)
