BTEC Certificate In Art & Design Level 3 – Ceramics

Key Course Information

This is a one- year, one-day per week course that provides an opportunity for students with previous experience in ceramics to learn new and more advanced techniques as well as extending their existing skills. Technical skills are taught through practical workshops where students experiment, push and challenge materials, techniques and processes. Three projects are set throughout the year, which are underpinned by contextual research and design development. Students are encouraged to develop their own design style through working on clearly assessed briefs, which are assessed and graded at the end of each term.

During the course, students develop independence and learn to present themselves and their work with confidence. They are encouraged to be critical and analytical of their own and other’s work during lessons and group feedback sessions, providing means to question and debate. Over the year learners are introduced to the thriving Design and Craft scene in London through visits to galleries and museums. Students also gain insight into the professional pathways and industries that exist in the field of ceramics. A practicing designer maker that works professionally in the ceramics industry teaches the course.

In order to undertake the course you must be able to demonstrate previous experience of working in ceramics, in addition to the proven ability to research, draw and design. This qualification is awarded by BTEC and covers three units, which are worth thirty credits. From this course students typically progress onto our Professional Development pathway or a BA honours degree.
