Course Description
This short course is a practical, studio based programme which will give you a good introduction to etching. You will learn to work in the light and well-equipped studio with specialist facilities and learn how to create images by working on a zinc plate.
Etching is an intaglio technique where the image is bitten by acid and where a drawing is made through a layer of wax, this is referred to as hard ground and soft ground and acts as an acid resist. The course is a combination of structured teaching and informal workshop time and is aimed at beginners, those who wish to re-fresh their printmaking and the more advanced student or have a background in another art media such as painting, design graphics, sculpture and do on.
It is important to attend classes on a regular basis to make the most of the teaching and to come punctually to the class as much of the teaching will begin with a demonstration.
What background and qualifications do you need to join?
All students are admitted to the College on the basis that they:
• Agree to comply with the KCC student code of conduct
• Provide original documentation that confirms entry qualifications.
• Meet the course entry requirements
• Provide information so that a school or college reference can be obtained if you are
between 16-19
What does the course lead to?
On completion of the course you will have a small portfolio of prints which can be shown at interview for higher level printmaking courses or other Fine Art courses within the college such as Foundation/HNC.
Where will I study?
The printmaking studio is at the Chelsea Centre in the Carlyle building on the ground floor, room CG05
What are the facilities and equipment like?
The studio is light with specialist facilities for all the Intaglio techniques including 2 Rochat
printing presses, bed size: 26x48.
How much should I study outside class?
You do need to keep a sketchbook documenting your research, development of ideas and technical notes and can be done both in the class and at home.
How is the course assessed?
There is no formal qualification for this course and assessment is ongoing on an informal bases.
Are any course materials online?
None at present.
What books and equipment do I need?
You need to bring art equipment such as pencils, eraser, a range of brushes, stanley knife, scissors, apron, and a sketchbook. You will also need heavy duty rubber gloves which can be bought in the studio.
What else do I need to buy? / What extra costs are there?
There is a studio fee of £10.00 for the course payable to the tutor which covers all materials you will need except paper and plates which you pay extra for as you use them. All materials are available to buy in the studio.
