Course Description
The Btec Level 1 Photography Award is a solid introduction to the main areas of photographic image making: camea control, composition, traditional darkroom (film processing & printing), studio lighting as well as the role of photography.
The course consists of lectures, practical demos and workshops, group work presentations, group tutorials and an exhibition visit to look at the role of photography in a wider context.
The students are assigned a number of mini projects as well as a major one and need to keep a written record of the learning as part of the assissment process.
The course runs one day per week for 12 weeks.
What background and qualifications do you need to join?
No need of formal qualification although a proven related interest (photography workshops, art & design courses) would be useful.
Ability to take course notes.
What does the course lead to?
Level 2 and Level 2 photography
Where will I study?
At the Hortensia Centre and at the Wornington Centre for the wet darkroom sessions.
What are the facilities and equipment like?
Fully equipped photographic studio and wet darkroom
How much should I study outside class?
Students should dedicate at least one extra half day per week for homework and project preparation.
How is the course assessed?
There is no written exam. You will be assessed throughout and at the end of the course on the production of your major project and course work record.
Are any course materials online?
All course hand outs and related information are posted on Moodle.
What books and equipment do I need?
It is essential that you own or have access to a camera, preferable an SLR (film or digital).
What else do I need to buy? / What extra costs are there?
An additional £5 per term studio/shared material fee.
Extra costs are the materials needed (lab printing, films, flash cards, USB, photographic paper, ink, presentation materials etc), this is estimated at around £60 upwards.
What do I need to bring to the interview?
You will be asked to bring along some prints and a task will be set. The exact requirements will be sent to you with an interview date and time on application.

- Provide information so that a school or college reference can be obtained if you are between 16-19 years old
