Course Description
This programme is designed to build on your interest and passion for the hair and beauty industry. It provides you with an ideal, practical introduction to prepare you for further learning or training. It enables you to achieve credits and prepares you to begin working towards a first full Level 2 qualification. The course teaches you how to present a professional image, learn how to shampoo and condition the hair, create basic hair styles for women, and learn basic hand care treatments.
To complement this course there are additional and valuable qualifications that run along side this course which includes English, Maths and ICT and Personal Social Development to improve your learning.
What background and qualifications do you need to join?
No formal qualifications is required for this course, however an good level of spoken and written English is required to satisfy the hair and beauty team.
Enrolment on Personal Social Development, Entry 3/Level 1 Functional Skills English, Maths and ICT course is essential
What does the course lead to?
Entry Level 3 - You are completely new to the hair and beauty industry and want an introduction so you can see what a job would involve and develop some essential skills
Level 1 - You are just starting out in hair and beauty and want an understanding of the industry - enough to succeed in a job in the hair and beauty area or move on to further study.

What are the facilities and equipment like?
There is good salon space that will help you with your studies. All of our courses take place in our well-equipped hairdressing and beauty therapy training salons and theory studio where you can learn new skills and client procedures in a professional and friendly environment.
How much should I study outside class?
There is a certain amount of home study for both practical and theory each week to complete the course. It is suggested that an additional one hours per day is spent studying and practicing procedures taught.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment is by successfully completing assignments from each unit that externally set and internally marked

Are any course materials online?
You will be provided with course materials; however you are required to purchase a text book to use as a learning aid. You will have access to a Virtual Learning Environment (MOODLE) both at College and in the comfort of your own home. Research on the internet is strongly advised to support any assignment or presentational work.
What books and equipment do I need?
A text books is required to support student learning while on the course. To assist with practical skills a basic kit is required
What else do I need to buy? / What extra costs are there?
You will need to purchase basic stationery supplies such as pens, paper, and folder. Photocopy cards and USB sticks can be bought from the Library or Learning Resource Dept should they be required.
What do I need to bring to the interview?
If you are aged 16-18 you will need to bring: 1) One piece of work that you are proud of and are willing to talk about 2) a book or magazine that you are currently reading 3) a reference from your head teacher/lecturer and 4) be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the interview.
If you are 18+ a reference from school, college, employer or previous employer (we only accept written references) will be considered. If you have access requirements or need any other support during the interview for any learning difficulties and/or disabilities, please contact us in the hairdressing and beauty therapy section and we will arrange this on your behalf.

- Provide original documentation that confirms entry qualifications.
- Meet the course entry requirements
- Provide information so that a school or college reference can be obtained if you are between 16-19 years old
