Glass, Jewellery and Pottery - Substantial Courses

The following courses are designed for students wishing to undertake a substantial programme of study in one of the above disciplines. When applying, students need to select which specialist area they wish to study.

Whatever you choose; Pottery, Sculptural Ceramics, Jewellery, Silversmithing, Stained or Kiln formed Glass, you will find our courses challenging and empowering. We will help you start at the level of course that is right for you and enable you to progress onto the next stage and into work or higher education. On all courses, projects are designed to mirror the industry and take you through the design process while you develop a high level of skill and professional practice. You will benefit from our prestigious team of lecturing staff.

Exhibitions, held at various stages of the year, give the opportunity for students to show their work in a public context.

Specialist workshops are fully equipped with machinery, tools and materials appropriate to the subject area. You will also be able to buy essential tools and materials from the College.

A small additional studio fee covers the cost of shared materials.

    Level 2

    Qualification

    A substantial BTEC course aimed at students with little or no experience in the crafts wishing to learn and develop making and designing skills in either Ceramics or Glass. You will undertake a programme of study in which design and practice are integrated. You will learn techniques and processes, experiment with a range of materials and explore design solutions to produce well resolved personal work. The course leads to a nationally recognised qualification at Level 2 and provides a strong base to progress into higher courses in 3 dimensional design.

    Qualification

    Are you 16 – 18 and a practical person, interested in a career in Art and Design?

    You will study:

    • Drawing and Design - using a variety of media
    • Graphic Design
    • Interior Design
    • Ceramics
    • Jewellery
    • Glass
    • Functional skills – English, Maths and ICT
    • Visits to museums

    This is a three day a week hands-on course with projects that mirror industry where you will initially have a go at different subjects and then be able to specialise in your chosen area, with the emphasis on learning lots of practical skills, exploring ideas, being creative, and discovering what other artists and designers are doing now and in the past. You will be based in our specialist workshops and studios, equipped to industry standards, and taught by experienced professionals. In addition you will get all the basic stuff you need, like Maths and English, career advice and preparation for work, taught especially so that it is relevant to you as an emerging professional artist/designer/maker. If you complete this course you can progress onto Level 3 and prepare your portfolio for university or apply for one of the many jobs in the art and design industry. The course is designed especially for 16 to 18 year olds but all ages are welcome to apply.

    Qualification

    This 2 day a week substantial course is designed to provide you with a range of fundamental jewellery and silversmithing skills. It is a project based "hands on" course which will encourage you to develop ideas, practical skills and knowledge through benchwork, drawing, the study of design principles, and making links with industry.

    Level 3

    Qualification

    This intensive one year course will provide you with the necessary confidence and skill to develop as a creative Designer-Maker and progress onto more advanced courses or higher education. Through practical projects in specialist well-equipped studios, you will gain an understanding of the design process and how ideas are generated and realised into finished work. Pathways include jewellery, silversmithing, architectural stained glass, kiln formed glass, sculptural ceramics and pottery. Guided by a team of tutors / professional designers, you will explore a variety of materials, acquire new technical skills and gain a contextual, historical and critical understanding of the design world. Previous experience is required. The course is accredited by BTEC.

    Level 3

    Qualification

    This challenging one year foundation course will build on the skills you bring to college. It will give you the knowledge, breadth, intensive preparation and quality of work necessary to compete for a place on a wide variety of specialised BA/FdA university courses in Art & Design. The diagnostic nature of the foundation course will help you to discover and develop your strengths, and choose your preferred area of specialisation. At the Wornington Centre we offer a specialist Design pathway so that in term 2 and 3 you can chose and combine Ceramics, Jewellery, Glass, Graphics and Interior Design along with Drawing, Painting, and Printing . Contextual studies are integrated and you are required to produce some written work. The course allows you to develop individuality, experiment with new ways of creative and visual thinking, explore the breadth of possibilities within art and design in two and three dimensions and pursue a sustained investigation into your chosen specialism.
