Pottery and Ceramics Courses

These are part time pottery and ceramics courses. For more substantial course please look under Glass, Jewellery and Pottery courses.

The following courses are designed to meet a variety of student needs from introductory to advanced levels. Our lecturers are all practicing, exhibiting ceramicists who also have professional teaching qualifications.

Our workshops are equipped with the necessary specialist tools and equipment including wheels, spray equipment and a variety of kilns. We stock basic materials which students can buy at cost price as required. Students will need to provide their own protective clothing, files and sketchbooks. (In some areas there will be an additional studio fee to cover the cost of shared materials.)

Our team of experienced lecturers will give you plenty of support and you will benefit from learning within a friendly adult environment.

  • Pottery for Beginners - BTEC Award Level 1 ( 11JFC030 )

    Level 1

    Qualification

    A beginners course that will introduce you to ceramic techniques, handbuilding and throwing on the wheel as well as exploring creative ideas in your sketchbook. You will explore a variety of surface decoration techniques including use of slips and glazes. Students pay for clay used and a studio fee.

    Level 2

    Qualification

    A two term course that will introduce ceramic techniques and design as well as extend the skills of those with previous experience. Techniques taught are handbuilding and throwing, mould making and surface decoration. Studetns are encouraged to develop ideas and historical awareness through working in a sketchbook and visiting museums. The studio is well equipped with wheels, kilns, extruder, spray booth and a wide variety of eartherware and stoneware glazes. Students pay for clay used and a small studio fee.

    Whether you are a beginner or have some previous experinece, you will develop and learn new skills, from sculptural techniques to throwing on the wheel, making moulds and trying different glazing techniques. Students pay for clay used and a studio fee.
