Deaf Awareness Week 2010

Deaf Awareness Week 2010

As Deaf Awareness Week 2010 kicks off across the country, Kensington and Chelsea College staff and students have thrown their support behind the national campaign.

As part of the high-profile campaign taking place across the UK, the college is hosting its very own Deaf Awareness Day at the Wornington Centre.

Taking place on Wednesday June 30, the one-day event is aimed at broadening people's knowledge of sign language by teaching the signs for commonly used phrases, as well as offering a translation service.

Members of the public, along with college staff and students are being invited to take part in the event being hosted by the college's Study Support Services.

The college's Study Support Services already has an excellent reputation locally for providing good communication support to its student users.

It was also the first college department of its kind in the UK to use webcams to communicate with deaf students off-site.

Reg Cobb, Study Support Officer for Kensington and Chelsea College said: 'Within the UK population, one in seven people have some degree of hearing loss and the main barrier to social inclusion for those suffering severe or complete deafness is communication.'

'National Deaf Awareness Week is a great way to raise awareness about the issue and the staff and students involved with the campaign are very much looking forward to showing people how a few simple changes in their communication style can make a big difference to those suffering from partial or complete deafness.'

The College's Deaf Awareness Day takes place at the Wornington Centre, Wornington Road 11.30am and 2.00 pm
