Financial Help for Students
Under 19's
If you are under 19, you don't pay any fees for your course. You may also be eligible for additional help dependant on your household income and/or personal circumstance.
Sources of financial help include:
EMAs and New 16-18 Bursary (for students joining us for the first time in 2011-12)
Young people in care, care leavers, young people in receipt of income support and disabled young people in receipt of Employment Support Allowance who are also in receipt of Disability Living Allowance will be eligible to receive a bursary of £1,200 a year.
All other 16-18 year olds can apply for the general Bursary Fund. This will be a means tested allowance of up to £20 per week (subject to availability of funding). Decisions on payments will be notified by the end of September.
Continuing 16-18 year olds
If you applied for EMA in 2009/10 and have a 3 year guarantee you will be eligible for payments at the level agreed in 2009/10. If you applied for EMA in 2010/11 and you were awarded the full £30.00 allocation you will be eligible for EMA payments of £20.00 per week.
EMA will not be available to any new students starting college in 2011/12 or to students who received EMA in 2010/11 and were awarded either £20.00 or £10.00 per week.
You can find out more information on the Education.org frequently asked questions website.
The Adult Learning Grant (for continuing students)
- From August 2011, decisions about the use of adult learner support funding will be fully devolved to colleges. The Adult Learning Grant (ALG) budget will be combined with discretionary learner support, and allocated directly to colleges for them to distribute to those learners most in need.
- No current learners receiving ALG, and whose courses are continuing, will lose out, as they will continue to receive payments during 2011/12.
- The total adult learner support budget will rise through the Spending Review period.
- Existing ALG recipients will receive a Notice of Entitlement (NoE) for 2011/12. Learners who will be continuing on their course in 2011/12 will need to take this to their learning provider to continue to receive weekly payments from the Learner Support Service.

Additional Learning Fund (ALF) Higer Education Courses
The college has an Access to Learning Fund. This fund is strictly for students on HE courses. It is only a small amount of money to cover all courses. It is for students who are in extreme hardship and need money for higher than expected costs in relation to their courses.
