Art and Design Foundation - Full-time and Part-time Courses

The Foundation courses are a unique opportunity for those who wish to begin their artistic careers with a challenging but rewarding period of study. Their diagnostic nature encourages experiment within a project based structure. Students will be able to build a portfolio of work and are supported in their progression to higher levels of study either in the college or at university. Studio space, exhibition opportunities, high levels of individual tutorials and expert technical tuition make these courses some of the best in London.

Art materials and model fees are not included in the course fees below. Basic materials can be purchased from the College. Extra costs will be indicated in the course outline or at an interview/advice sessions

    Level 3

    Qualification

    This challenging one year foundation course will build on the skills you bring to College. It will give you the knowledge, breadth, intensive preparation and quality of work necessary to compete for a place on a wide variety of specialised BA/FdA university courses in Art & Design. The diagnostic nature of the foundation course will help you to discover and develop your strengths, and choose your preferred area of specialisation. These are Fine Art, Visual Communication, Fashion / Textiles and 3D Design. The course, which is unit based, has three stages; Exploratory, Pathway and Confirmatory. The course culminates with a Final Major Project, which generates a self-directed body of work for the end of course exhibition. Contextual studies and Art History are integrated and you are required to produce two pieces of written work. The course allows you to develop individuality, experiment with new ways of creative and visual thinking, explore the breadth of possibilities within art and design in two and three dimensions and pursue a sustained investigation into your chosen specialism.

    Level 2

    Qualification

    The Foundation preparation BTEC level 2 course in art and design is intended to develop and build on students art and design skills, knowledge and enthusiasm. Its aim is to provide an important stepping stone for student's intent in a career in art and design, by preparing students for study on the level 3 foundation course at Kensington & Chelsea College or University. The course covers study in: Drawing, Painting, 3D, Printmaking, Photography, Graphic Design and Fashion. The course is project based with strong encouragement to develop personal ideas and a commitment to the development of drawing skills as a tool for the communication of ideas.

    Level 3

    Qualification

    This two year option will allow you to study and complete a Foundation course on a part time basis. The course offer is very similar to the full time one year course but it is aimed at returning students who may not be able to study full time because of work or family commitments. The diagnostic nature of the foundation course remains and will help you to discover and develop your strengths, and choose your preferred area of specialisation. The course is unit based and has three stages; Exploratory, Pathway and Confirmatory. The course culminates with a Final Major Project, which generates a self-directed body of work for the end of course exhibition. During the course you will build a portfolio of work and be supported in preparing to apply to higher level courses. There will be opportunities to progress to our own HNC Fine Art or undergraduate studies at other colleges Contextual studies and Art History are integrated and you are required to produce two pieces of written work. The course allows you to develop individuality, experiment with new ways of creative and visual thinking, explore the breadth of possibilities within art and design in two and three dimensions and pursue a sustained investigation into your chosen specialism.
