Printmaking Courses

If you enjoy painting and drawing why not try a printmaking course? The techniques you will learn offer exciting ways to build on your drawing skills and reinterpret existing paintings or drawings in print form. If you are a beginner, the unique characteristics of printmaking will open up a new world of image making and unlock you creative potential. Many of our experienced students came as beginners and in some cases have developed a long-term commitment continuing at degree and MA level and also setting up their own studio workshops. Many students say printmaking is addictive once you start! So why not come and try one of our courses!

Art materials are not included in the course fee. Basic materials can be purchased from the College. Extra costs will be indicated in the course outline or at an interview/advice sessions.

    Level 1

    Qualification

    This one year course is a practical, studio based programme which will give you a good overview of the printmaking media and grounding in a wide range of techniques. You will learn to work in the well-equipped studio with specialist facilities and develop your ideas and imagery into a portfolio of creative prints. The course is a combination of structured teaching and informal workshop time. Every few weeks a new technique will be introduced by demonstration and discussion while looking at the work of other artists. The range of techniques covered offer different approaches to creating an image such as, the painterly Monoprint, the linear Etching and Drypoint and the textural Collagraph. Students are encouraged to explore the creative and more experimental possibilities of these processes while also gaining a good working knowledge of the traditional skills.

    Qualification

    A studio based programme, beginners to printmaking will gain a good overview of the printmaking media and a grounding in a range of techniques. You will learn to work in the well-equipped studio with specialist facilities to develop your ideas and imagery into a portfolio of prints. Week by week, you will be introduced to each stage of the photo-etching process including how to prepare and output images for photo-etching using Photoshop, preparing the photo-etching plate, testing and selecting exposure times, and developing, etching and printing from a zinc plate.

    Qualification

    This course will provide an opportunity for experienced printmakers to further their exploration of the diverse processes and techniques offered in print. You will work in the well-equipped studio with specialist facilities to further develop your ideas and imagery into a portfolio of prints. Working within a studio provides a unique dynamic which encourages group discussions, collaboration and cross pollination of ideas and approaches, and can be a great way for artists to enhance their practice both technically and conceptually. You will be supported in this activity through individual tutorials and group critiques which are aimed at encouraging a useful reflective practice.

  • Printmaking Evening Workshop ( 10TAE038 )

    These two five week short courses are practical studio based sessions suitable for beginners, those who wish to re-fresh their printmaking and for the more advanced student. If you are new to printmaking you will be introduced to the painterly printmaking technique of Monoprinting and the textured Collograph . If you are an advanced printmaking student you can attend these sessions and develop your personal work in the printmaking technique of your choice. You will be introduced to Photo Etching during the following five sessions in March.

    The course is a combination of practical workshop time and exhibition visits to research the contemporary and historical practise of artists. There will be regular discussions in class about artist’s work, their ideas and approach, which will help inform and inspire your own printmaking practice.The majority of the course is practical studio time to give you a good overview of the printmaking media and grounding in a range of techniques.
