Our First Steps courses are aimed at those with no formal qualifications. They will enable you to return to study, or get your education on the right path - both of which will help improve job and prospects and will help you take control of your future.
Courses are flexible and multi-disciplined, meaning you can try out a variety of vocational subject areas. These range from Construction, Art, Design and Photography to Hair and Beauty, Health and Care and Business Studies. Additional support in Maths, English and IT is also given.

Qualification
Enrolments: This course is for students who wish to gain their first Art Qualification. 16 - 19: All students who are 16 - 19 should enrol on course code 11TFV10505. This is the 3 day week. Mon/Tue/Fri. 19 and Over: If you are 19 and over and have no Art Qualifications you can choose between three options, Mon, Tue, or the day week. Functional Skills: If you have no qualifications in Maths, English, and I.C.T. you can gain the Entry 3 Certificate in Functional Skills and progress to Level1 in your first year at KCC. You will concentrate on building your Art and Design skills in Drawing, Painting,Printmaking and Design. Building your First Art Portfolio for Progression to Level 2 is a very important stage in your development. Drawing is the key to all visual art disciplines and this will be central to your learning point. You can attend with no skills at all and start at the beginning or develop your skills with exciting workshops in Colour, Composition, and working from your Imagination. You will be able to add subject specialism's to your study at other times during the week. We have a Fine Art and Design Pathway. There are three stages to the course. The Award; Explore Two Dimensions, Explore Drawing. The Certificate; Explore Painting, Explore Printmaking, Explore Personal Project, Planning and Enterprise Project. First Steps to Hair & Beauty Level 1 ( 11ZFH003 )
Level 1
Qualification
This course introduces you to the hair and beauty industry preparing you to progress on to level 2 in Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy. This course teaches you how to present a professional image, shows you how to shampoo and condition the hair effectively as well as creating basic hair styles for women. You will also learn basic hand and nail care treatments to broaden your experiences while on the programme. To compliment this path there are additional and valuable qualifications that run along side this course which includes Personal Social Development, English Maths and ICT to improve your learning. A uniform is worn during practical salon sessions.
