Expenses

You will need to purchase your own ingredients for our courses. The weekly cost varies according to the course: the NOCN Professional Cookery courses have one practical session per week, which averages out at approximately £15 per week depending on what we are making. Pastry Chefs course has one practical session which averages out at approximately £10 per week. For the Sugarcraft and Cake Decoration courses - Students need to purchase specialist tools, as advised by the tutor. The cost is approximately £60 per term.

We keep a range of store cupboard items (e.g. eggs, flour, sugar, fats and oils, seasonings) in the department, which students use as required - for this, we charge the students an additional £30 per term (or per 10 week course). For some of the regional courses, where the tutor also purchases specialist ingredients on behalf of the class, this cost will be £35.

Students on professional courses will also need to purchase a full set of chef's whites (approximate cost £30 if purchased from the department's catering supplier) and a few specialist items such as ramekin dishes and loose based flan tins, as advised by the tutor. The kitchen is equipped with knives, pans, electrical equipment and many other utensils.
