  • Write a Novel in a Month ( 10ELW013 )

    This short course aims to help the novice or professional writer to complete 50,000 words in one calendar month. As well as receiving modules on plot, story arc, character and beginnings and endings, students will be encouraged to write, write, write. Last year's class wrote 500,000 words. The aim is not to procrastine but to complete. The course is taught by a professional novelist. Students are required to have good written English - so bring your laptops, pens or quills and parchment! The November course runs concurrently with the online NaNoWriMo website and competition.

    A practical course which combines an introduction to the publishing industry with advice on how to present work for publication. It covers writing for magazines and newspapers, as well as novels, nonfiction and short stories. Topics include researching the market, writing feature and travel articles, writing an effective synopsis and developing an author profile.

  • Writing Comedy for Beginners ( 10ELW007 )

    This is a complete course on the nuts and bolts of writing jokes, stand-up, sketches, spoofs and longer pieces such as sitcom, novels or comic prose. The course is taught by a professional comedian, comedy writer and novelist. Previous students have gone on to work on TV and radio. Whatever your level of interest, this course is open, inclusive and fun. All that is required is good written and spoken English and a sense of humour.   • Writing Situation Comedy ( 10ELW011 )

    Sitcom is one of the most lucrative forms of Television writing. This course - taught by a professional sitcom writer - will cover the nuts and bolts of narrative comedy from concept and character to plotting, scripting and marketing your work. An interest in the form is all that is required to attend, plus good written and spoken English. We will examine current and classic examples of sitcom and students will be encouraged to work individually and on group projects. Successful students have already gone on to write for 'The Thick of it', the Old Guys' and other Sitcoms.   • Creative Writing Workshops ( 10ELW004 )

    The intention is to create an environment in which individuals can develop their own writing while learning the skill of constructive criticism. Mutual support and assistance will be encouraged. To that end the programme is flexible and we will cover technical topics such as dialogue and optional exercises will be set and marked. The writing of novels, short stories, poetry and drama will be considered during the course.
