The Department of French at Kensington and Chelsea offers a wide range of courses at all levels ranging from beginners to advanced. As a student at our college you'll be taught by highly qualified and well-trained native speakers experienced in understanding and meeting the needs of students. A comprehensive advice, guidance and information service carried out by language specialists will ensure you join a level suitable to your existing needs and skills. Emphasis is on the spoken word enabling you to gain practical experience of French right from the start. The content and activities on the course will be relevant and interesting, developing your skills in reading, writing and listening and providing the opportunity to learn about the culture and traditions of France. Past KCC students studying French have excelled, we have an impressive record over many years of exam success at all levels.

    Level E

    Qualification

    For beginners who wish to progress at a moderate pace and gain a qualification. A high level of commitment is required. The course covers speaking and listening skills. Grammar is taught in an integrated way. The emphasis is on the communicative method of learning. Formal instruction, pair/group work, listening, reading and comprehension exercises, role plays, games, discussions and tutorials are all part of the course. Use is also made of video, audio tapes and the Interactive Board. Your level of language skill will be assessed by means of a test and an interview prior to enrolment.

    This course is lively and communicative! It is designed to improve your skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Teaching methods include: formal instruction, pair and group work, role-plays, games, discussions and tutorials. Video and audio tapes are also used. If you have completed the French for beginners course which started last September, or any equivalent experience around 40 hours of studying the language then this is the course for you. Upon completion you can join an intermediate course the following year.

    Qualification

    For you if you have finished successfully our beginners OCR CBLC Beginners French course or have an equivalent prior knowledge of the language, (50 to 70 hours of tuition). This course is practical and focuses mainly on the skills of speaking and listening. The emphasis is on the communicative method of learning. Grammar is taught in an integrated way. This course will prepare you to join GCSE French Higher.

  • French GCSE (Foundation) Short Course ( 11DFR117 )

    Level 2

    Qualification

    You must have some previous learning of the language of approximately 30 hours tuition or the equivalent experience of speaking and reading in the language. Your level of language skill will be assessed by means of a test and an interview prior to enrolment. This course covers reading, writing, listening and speaking. Grammar is taught in an integrated way. The emphasis is on the communicative method of learning. Formal instruction, pair/group work, listening, reading and comprehension exercises, role plays, games, discussions and tutorials are all part of the course. Use is also made of visual and audio materials. Past exam papers are used in class activities to help prepare students for the final Edexcel exams, held in May and June. All four language skills are assessed. A minimum of 3 hours home study per week is required.

    This course will enable you to use integrated language skills to meaningfully address authentic texts as well as contemporary issues at advanced level. In order to improve your oral skills, there will be a detailed study of French current affairs through the extensive use of French newspapers and television news. The students will participate actively in the choice of the learning material.
