College Project Offers Free Courses To Help Jobless Back To Work

Kensington and Chelsea College has teamed up with Jobcentre Plus to offer a free training programme that could lead to jobs for the unemployed.

Under the partnership project anyone registered for Jobseekers or Employment Support Allowance will have the chance to access free training for a range of popular jobs.

Potential clients have the opportunity to sign up to one of five courses aimed at developing skills for roles in Carpentry, Health and Social Care, Business Administration, Customer Service or Information Communication Technology.

The courses last between two and four weeks and include a weekly 'Work Club' session which offers support with job searches, applications, and interview preparation.

On course completion the college also sources potential job opportunities for clients through its links with several employers including Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, The Royal borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Alandale Construction and Kensington Housing Trust.

College Principal Mike Jutsum said:

'This project is an example of the great work that can be achieved through strong partnerships. By working with Jobcentre Plus we've been able to design courses that will help unemployed people apply for a greater range of jobs, as well as improve their chances of getting it. As a college we continuously strive to equip our local community with the skills and training it needs to navigate its way through difficult economic times.'

Staff from Jobcentre Plus were invited to the college's Maxilla Walk Campus as part of the official launch for the project. During their visit staff were given a tour of the centre and met with the tutors responsible for delivering the courses under the project.

May Geasley-Scherping, Performance Team Leader for Jobcentre Plus North Kensington, said:

'The project presents a fantastic opportunity for clients and provides the Jobcentre with invaluable support in helping the jobless back into employment.'
