Award Winning Student Champions Adult Learners Week

Isla Campbell wins the 2011 Feltmakers Design Award

Award Winning Student Champions Adult Learners’ Week At Kensington And Chelsea College!

As celebrations for Adult Learners’ Week 2011 gather pace, Kensington and Chelsea College had its very own adult learning success story to champion.

The college, which is backing the national event being held from May 14 – 20, recently celebrated the achievement of adult learner Isla Campbell and three other students who triumphed at a national design competition.

Isla, on the College’s HNC Millinery course, designed and created a hat that earned her a first place win for the 2011 Feltmakers Design Award, organised by the Worshipful Company of Feltmakers of London.

Judges also awarded Kensington and Chelsea College students Beth Simpson second place, Harvy Santos third placed and Sophie Beale the title for Innovative Use of Felt.

Isla, 26-year-old from Brockley caught the judges’ eye with her bold design, beating entrants from across the UK to win £1200 and the opportunity to work with established milliners. Her castle shaped design made from felt was themed on fairytales and is now set to be the showpiece at a gala dinner for the competition winners.

The ambitious student, who describes her designs as theatrical said: ‘I can’t do small or minimalist designs. I’m all about big, bold and fantastical! I didn’t actually get a chance to read the email saying I had won the Feltmakers Design Competition so only realised when my classmates started congratulating me! I was so excited when I found out! It’s a real honour to win and a great start to my career.’

Isla is one of many high achieving adult learners at Kensington and Chelsea College and as part of Adult Learners Week the college is holding a series of free events encouraging people to pick up a new skill.

Supporting Adult Learners Week, Isla added: ‘I love my course at the college. It challenges me artistically and technically and I have the opportunity to learn from amazing tutors. It’s never too late to get into education or pick up a new skill. Adult Learners Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate learning and the successes of people who are returning to education later in life. People should make the most of the free classes on offer at Kensington and Chelsea College for Adult Learners’ Week.’
