Celebrating Adult Learners Week 2014

Kensington and Chelsea College is celebrating Adult Learners Week 2014 with a range of free taster classes and exhibitions.

The College also had its own adult learning successes to share when Millinery alumnus Justin Smith recently turned heads with his latest project transforming Hollywood starlet Angelina Jolie into one of Disney’s most notorious characters.

The gifted milliner, who studied on the College’s internationally renowned HNC Millinery course, helped create the striking headpiece adorned with black horns, which brought to life the character of Maleficent played by Jolie.

Speaking about his time at the College, Smith said: “The College was an important part of my learning the art and craft of millinery and all its traditions, a stepping stone to help me develop and grow my signature style.”

The College’s Art and Design students are also showcasing their work with an end-of-year show in support of Adult Learners Week 2014.

Creative Arts ’14 opens to the public on Thursday June 19 and throws the spotlight on artists and designers specialising in jewellery, ceramics, silversmithing, glass, multimedia, interior design and graphic design.

Among the stunning works on display are intricate pieces of jewellery, beautiful craft pieces and cutting edge interior design and multimedia work exploring a range of themes and topics.

Among the budding designers exhibiting their work are Jim Lockton and Monica Watson who both won awards in this year’s V&A Museum backed ‘Inspired by…’ competition. The skilled duo beat hundreds of entries from across the UK to win. Jim won the Theatrical and Performance First Prize for his Ceramic ‘puppet’ entry and Monica won First Prize for her glass entry.
