Kensington and Chelsea College is offering businesses free language taster classes, including Spanish and French which were identified as being among the most important foreign languages to know for business.
Globally 329 million people speak Spanish as their first language – making it the second most spoken language in the world after Mandarin.* Whilst French is one of the official languages of the European Union, making knowing the language vital for any businesses operating in European markets.
Having bilingual or multilingual staff is a highly valued asset which can give an organisation the competitive edge when doing business in the international arena.
The British Council’s ‘Languages for the Future report’** identified Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Japanese as being vital to the UK over the next 20 years.
They were chosen based on economic, geopolitical, cultural and educational factors including the needs of UK businesses, the UK’s overseas trade targets, diplomatic and security priorities, and prevalence on the internet.
However a survey commissioned by the British Council as part of the report, suggests that three quarters of the UK public are unable to speak any of these languages well enough to hold a conversation.
