Radio Wanno wins three Koestler Awards

Radio Wanno

Radio Wanno has been awarded gold, silver and received a highly recommended award in the radio production category of this year’s Koestler Awards. The awards recognise and celebrate achievements within the arts in prison.

Radio Wanno had stiff competition from a host of other prison radio stations who also won awards, among others they include the RA Sony Award winning Electric Radio at Brixton, HMP Rye Hill and a Young Offenders Service in Leicester.

Radio Wanno men are awarded the Gold for their Radio Adverts Production, a collection of radio adverts created to promote courses and prison services available to prisoners within HMP Wandsworth.

Prison Radio’s first ever daily breakfast show gets the Silver Award, The Radio Wanno Breakfast Show presenter Martin said “This award demonstrates how far Radio Wanno has come in the past year and before I leave I hope that we win a national radio award because I think we deserve to”

Radio Wanno’s exclusive interview by Darren Holmes with former Mafia boss Louis Ferranti was highly recommended by the panel of judges made up from the Prison Radio Association.

The Radio Wanno project is managed by Media for Development in partnership with HMP Wandsworth and Kensington and Chelsea College. Kevin Field Project Manager at Radio Wanno said “I am chuffed to bits for the guys and the tutors Simon and Donovan who as a team put all the hard work into making great radio programmes that link into every day life in the prison, many of the men have never been involved in radio and by joining Wanno’s radio production course they’re now creating award winning radio for HMP Wandsworth”.

Radio Wanno will collect the award certificates at The Prison Radio Association conference in November.
