Royal visit to HMP Wandsworth

Princess Anne visits HMP Wandsworth

HRH the Princess Royal paid a visit to HMP Wandsworth on Wednesday 9th December – an early Christmas treat for us all!

Her visit was primarily to present the Butler Trust award to our Healthcare Team but she also expressed a desire to visit all areas of Learning & Skills and speak to some of the staff. Princess Anne had last visited HMP Wandsworth 10 years ago and was very interested in seeing first hand all the many changes in terms of educational & vocational opportunities that now exist for the prisoners towards resettlement upon release.

Every aspect of learning& skills put together a display of photographs in the Chapel and following her whistle-stop tour of the education & training areas she came to the chapel. A few KCC teaching staff met her and talked a little about their daily delivery during the tour and both Shanie Jamieson, Director of Business & Community Regeneration and Judy Fitt, Offender Learning Manager were privileged to be introduced to her in the Chapel. She displayed her usual interest in our work with the questions she asked and exhibited her lively sense of humour , when being presented with a cushion made by learners with a Union Jack emblazoned on one side commented that refreshingly it was accurate!
