BTEC National Diploma in Graphic Design ‘Tribes of Athens’ – Music Design for Black Athena Record

Our BTEC Level 3 Diploma Graphics Design students worked in collaboration with Black Athena. A music enterprise based in Athens who are a collective of DJs and musicians who run club nights and produce a Radio program.

The Brief

Students were asked to design the cover for a compilation album titled ‘Tribes of Athens’ being released in June 2016 this year and would reflect their musical output – mainly hip hop, electronic urban dance music. The compilation will be the first in a series so the design will act as a uniform ‘brand’ for the label so it will be easily identifiable as a Black Athena release. They were also asked to design a poster, flyer and web banner to promote the release and for a live event that would support it.

Black Athena

“The Black Athena philosophy is as much about the local as it is about the global. In an underground music field that increasingly is about A&Ring music directly from the internet and creating labels spearheaded by artists already accepted as ‘cool’. “The Black Athena philosophy is as much about the local as it is about the global. “Working with students on the artwork/design of our forthcoming release ‘Tribes of Athens’ has been a real pleasure for us! Their commitment, work ethic and professionalism regarding this project has been fantastic and and we feel that some of the work they have produced, can easily compete with commissioned work in our field.” Black Athena
