Whitechapel Gallery
Sarah Walsh, an Administrator at Whitechapel Gallery, says:
We currently have apprentices on the Business Administration and Creative and Cultural Heritage programmes. Being part of the scheme has widened the Gallery's audience and given opportunities to those who have an interest in working within the arts but may have found it hard to get into the industry without a relevant degree.
The Apprenticeship programme has definitely created a more diverse workforce and allowed us to identify the skills needed within the Gallery and provide us with more bespoke training, something which might not have been possible on the external job market.
Apprentices have also been less expensive to recruit and train than more experienced workers hired on the external labour market as you save on induction and further training costs.
Kensington and Chelsea College has given the Gallery an opportunity we would not have been able to commit to had it not been for the 100% funded training provided by the College. It has allowed us to enter into a partnership that aims to develop and support both business and apprentice.
I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship programme to other organisations as giving people opportunities to learn on the job whilst offering them tailored training suits both business and individual.
The gallery was founded in 1901 and the first to showcase some of the greatest names from British 20th Century Art.
